Why it matters
The diesel pump’s $$$ and Newsom’s cartoon tantrum turn a fuel-cost frustration into a question of public priorities. President Trump’s October 5 Executive Order 14435 directs temporary federal diesel-tax payment deferrals and penalty relief for highway use of dyed diesel; it does not itself forgive the deferred taxes. California separately restricts highway use of dyed diesel, and an October 7 fuel-industry notice reported that the state had not waived those restrictions. The cartoon criticizes that barrier to matching relief.
