Why are the tides rising? California’s fraud finally clogged the toilet.
Why it matters
The overflowing golden toilet turns public waste into an absurd flood. Newsom’s huge, filthy plunger makes cleaning up the mess look like an enormous job that has already gone badly. The real-world backdrop includes the California State Auditor’s findings about weaknesses in pandemic-era unemployment fraud prevention and improper benefit payments. The cartoon pushes that accountability concern to a ridiculous extreme: when waste overwhelms oversight, taxpayers get stuck cleaning up the mess.
