Russia/Ukraine: large drone exchange and Black Sea ship strike extend active fighting

Russia's Defense Ministry said it intercepted nearly 900 Ukrainian drones overnight across Russia, occupied Crimea and the Sea of Azov. AP described reports of a fuel-depot fire near Moscow and two deaths as unconfirmed. Odesa's regional governor said a Russian drone struck a Marshall Islands-flagged cargo ship carrying rapeseed oil in the Black Sea, killing one person and wounding seven. Russian forces also struck Ukrainian transport, medical, residential and commercial sites according to Ukrainian officials and AP imagery.
Nuclear-site claim
Rosatom said Ukrainian drones struck a laboratory and radioactive-waste facility at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, killing a delivery driver, while causing no nuclear-safety threat. Ukraine had not commented in the reviewed reporting and no current IAEA confirmation was located. The claim is therefore attributed, not established as an independently verified event.
Evidence limits
The Russian interception total, the Moscow-region depot damage and the Odesa vessel details are attributed claims; not all were independently verified. Separate Russian claims that Ukrainian drones hit facilities at the Russian-held Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant were not independently confirmed in this review, and Russia said there was no nuclear-safety threat. Active fighting continues with no operative ceasefire.
Assessment / inference
Inference: the strike volume and attacks affecting civilian transport and Black Sea shipping show continuing escalation risk on both sides. NATO spillover remains a separate contingency; this update does not establish a Russian attack on NATO territory.
What to watch next
Independent damage and casualty verification; Black Sea shipping; Zaporizhzhia nuclear-safety reporting; Russian and Ukrainian strike capacity; air-defense supplies; and any formally agreed and observed ceasefire.
What to watch next
Independent casualty and damage evidence, Black Sea shipping, nuclear-safety verification, air-defense capacity and negotiations.
