DRC Ebola: dated catch-up record passes 4,000 deaths as insecurity removes treatment capacity

Dated catch-up evidence: AP attributed October 1 DRC Health Ministry figures of 8,300 recorded cases and 4,018 deaths, compared with WHO's prior table of 8,224 confirmed cases and 3,982 confirmed deaths through September 29. AP also reported that soldiers burned an Ebola-hit displacement camp and transit center near Bunia, forcing about 19,000 people to flee, while an infected MSF worker was evacuated to the Netherlands.
Timing and evidence limits
These figures precede the October 3 brief cutoff but were absent from its targeted update and are added transparently as catch-up evidence. Counts use different reporting cutoffs and may be revised. Africa CDC said weekly confirmed cases fell from about 850 in mid-July to about 490 in September, while warning that insecurity and access barriers may partly explain the decline. A lower detected count is not proof of containment.
Assessment / inference
Inference: more than 4,000 reported deaths and the loss of a transit/treatment site materially worsen human impact and response capacity. Security, worker protection and pay, community trust and access remain operational determinants of control.
What to watch next
Reconciled WHO and Africa CDC totals; incident cases and deaths; affected health zones; access and contact follow-up; replacement treatment capacity; health-worker infections and pay; the MSF worker's outcome; and medical-countermeasure evidence.
What to watch next
Reconciled WHO/Africa CDC totals, geographic spread, access, worker protection, treatment capacity and countermeasure evidence.
