Five Employers Back Electronic Prior Authorization for Self-Funded Health Plans

Amazon, Axon, Google, Meta and Oracle signed an HHS and Labor statement supporting expansion of electronic prior-authorization capabilities to self-funded employer plans. HHS says more than 180 million people receive coverage through employers that sponsor such plans. The statement builds on voluntary 2025 payer commitments and a separate CMS final rule requiring certain covered payers—not every self-funded plan—to implement specified electronic capabilities beginning January 1, 2027. Employer support can broaden demand, but this announcement does not compel all self-funded plans or demonstrate fewer denials, shorter patient waits, lower administrative spending or improved outcomes.
