Justice Charges 28 California Permanent Residents in Election Cases

Justice announced criminal complaints, indictments or informations against 28 lawful permanent residents in California, alleging false citizenship claims, fraudulent voter registration, unlawful voting or related naturalization statements; 11 were arrested. DOJ says most allegedly cast ballots in prior elections and identifies the cases as part of Operation Protect the Vote. These are individual accusations, not convictions, a validated estimate of statewide noncitizen registration, proof about any election outcome or adjudication of the separate federal-state dispute over a larger list. Every defendant retains the presumption of innocence.
