Growth Continues as Hiring and Household Financing Remain Under Pressure

The latest official records show an economy still expanding, with slow hiring and expensive financing. August wholesale sales rose faster than inventories, while September payroll employment changed little. Treasury’s October 9 daily par yield was 5.24% for ten years, and Freddie Mac’s latest weekly 30-year mortgage average was 7.40%. These dated measurements describe different parts of the economy; none alone establishes a durable market trend or broad household improvement.

Growth has a dated foundation
The Bureau of Economic Analysis put second-quarter real gross domestic product growth at a 2.2% annual rate in its September 30 revision. That measures April through June. The first official estimate for the third quarter is due October 29.
Hiring remains modest
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reported September payrolls up 29,000 and unemployment at 4.2%, describing both as little changed. The Conference Board’s Employment Trends Index, published October 5, fell 0.5% in September but remained 1.0% above a year earlier. Its interpretation of moderate hiring ahead is a forecast, not an observed job gain.
Consumers report strain
The Conference Board’s September confidence index fell to 81.9 from 88.6. Michigan’s separate preliminary October survey also showed weak current conditions. The surveys use different scales and methods, so their index levels should not be compared directly; both remain distinct from actual spending and inflation.
Distribution is moving faster
The Census Bureau’s October 8 release showed August wholesale sales up 1.8% and inventories up 0.5%, revised from the preliminary 0.7%. The inventory-to-sales ratio was 1.18 months. These seasonally adjusted figures are in current dollars, so faster turnover is not a direct measure of physical output or completed new factory capacity.
Borrowing conditions need a consistent clock
Treasury’s daily interpolated par yield for October 9 was 5.24% at ten years and 5.60% at thirty years. It uses indicative market quotations near 3:30 p.m.; it should not be spliced into an intraday benchmark series as though the measurements were identical. The Federal Reserve’s September 16 quarter-point increase to a 3.75%–4.00% target range was a policy decision, separate from these market yields.
Prices and financing meet at home
August consumer prices rose 3.4% over a year, while BEA’s personal consumption expenditures price measure also rose 3.4%. The identical headline rates come from different measures. Higher fuel and borrowing costs can affect household budgets, but the timing depends on contracts, location and spending patterns. The latest mortgage average offers a more direct housing-finance indicator than an old intraday Treasury quote.
Investment must become usable capacity
Imported machinery and semiconductors can support domestic investment, while higher import values also reflect foreign supply and prices. Announced projects and AI-related equipment demand do not establish completed factories, new productivity or savings for every family. Follow commissioned capacity, sustained output and real household income.
The coming releases can sharpen the picture
September CPI and real earnings arrive October 14; Census plans historical wholesale revisions October 26; third-quarter GDP and September income and spending follow October 29. Market snapshots should carry their own observation times and remain separate from those official releases.
What to watch next
September CPI and real earnings October 14; historical wholesale revisions October 26; third-quarter GDP and September PCE October 29. Follow dated official closing-rate measures and household borrowing costs.
Material unknowns
- Stock prices, oil and yields are time-stamped market readings and can reverse; they are temporary conditions, not permanent conclusions. The Federal Reserve sets monetary policy independently, and market pricing does not guarantee a later rate decision. Wholesale inventories and sales are nominal business measures, not direct household-price indexes. Private economists' third-quarter GDP estimates and projected trade contribution are forecasts rather than official outcomes.
